I. Job Summary

Handles all activity relative to patient accounts after and during billing through pay-out or write-off.

Assignment requires planning and arranging own work to accomplish/complete daily/weekly job duties. Applies own knowledge to solve routine operational problems. Must be able to handle a variety of tasks while meeting established deadlines.

II. Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintains and keeps current the receivables collector work file.
  • Enters proper documentation in the Paragon notes to ensure proper audit trail.
  • Places collection calls to patients and insurance companies to obtain payment in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Generates follow-up letters to patients and payors. Works collector reports and documentation of such entered in the Paragon system.
  • Enters missing insurance information obtained after admission and requests new claim from system.
  • Receives necessary correspondence and phone calls for insurance information on their account or
    other hospital programs.
  • Works weekly reports to assure account balances are in correct statement paths.

  • Works Denial/Appeals Queue daily to assure information is corrected and determine if account may
    need to be appealed to payors in a timely manner according to insurance contract requirements.
  • Answers phone when other responsible parties are busy or away. Answers calls too complex
    or involved for cashier.
  • Assists with special projects assigned by PFS Director/PFS Supervisor
  • May be cross trained to cashier or billing verification.
  • Employee will be required to be readily available to work during any weather related incidents or other natural disasters and/or any emergency situations that may arise

III. Education

A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Post high school business training is desirable.
Typing is required.

IV. Qualifications And Experience

Prior experience in a medical office or business office setting with an emphasis on adult public contact and attention to detail is required.

V. Physical Demands

Must be able to do the following on a constant, ongoing basis:

  • See sufficiently to complete forms, read instructions and use calculator for mathematical computations.
  • Converse appropriately with individuals both inside and outside the hospital.
  • Give and receive simple and complex instructions.
  • Read and understand written language.
  • Concentrate on, and remember varied job duties.
  • Prioritize work of position.
  • Solve problems ranging from simple to complex.
  • Use both hands for typing, filing, etc.
  • Grasp pen or pencil for long periods of time for writing and recording mathematical computations.
  • Carry less than 10 pounds on a regular basis and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Work requires sitting at desk for long periods of time to complete paperwork, type, and converse on the telephone.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job without being a danger (liability, risk, etc.) to self or others.

VI. Effect Of Error

Probable errors may be serious and involve monetary loss and loss of productivity. Effect may
involve the hospital and or public. Regularly works with confidential data such as patient accounts,
information which, if disclosed, might have adverse internal and or external effects.

VII. Working Conditions

Work is performed in a well lighted, heated and cooled office environment with a high level of activity and interruptions. Traffic is excessive and distracting. The lack of interview privacy and tense condition of the patient makes it difficult to maintain positive patient relations. Must deal with patients and others in various physical conditions, sometimes with exposure to infectious/contagious diseases.
