I. Job Summary

It is the responsibility of the Medical Laboratory Technician to collect laboratory specimens as requested. The specimens are analyzed according to laboratory standards, recorded accurately so that the best service possible is available to the physicians for use in diagnosis and treatment of the patient.

II. Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Collects, receives and accessions a variety of specimens.
  2. Performs and documents laboratory test and/or resul
  3. Performs and records calibration according to policy.
  4. Performs and records daily Quality Control and documents
    any corrective action.
  5. Performs and records maintenance procedures according to policy.
  6. Performs basic clerical duties related to test data with notification
    of critical values according to policy.
  7. Performs and records analysis of proficiency tests according to policy.

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains assigned lab section to include QC, maintenance logs, inventory of supplies & procedure manuals.
  2. Updates procedure manuals.
  3. Complies with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety and infection control.
  4. Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  5. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  6. Completes annual safety, infection control and educational requirements
  7. Is knowledgeable of the mission, ethics and goals of the department
  8. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  9. Trains new MT or ML T employees.
  10. Employee authorization for access to EPHI is determined by job function and is under the direction of his/her Department Director.

Employee will be required to be readily available to work during any weather related incidents or other natural disasters and/or any emergency situations that may rise.

III. Education

A.S. degree, MLT (ASCP) certification or MLT classification as recognized by GDCH with certification.
Licensure: None
Education and/or In-services to verify ability to obtain specimens appropriately for the age of the patient
i.e., Geriatrics, Pediatrics.
Certification: ML T classification as recognized by ASCP, AAB or AMT.

IV. Qualifications And Experience

With credentials and hospital orientation, entry level into position. Experience preferred.
