I. Job Summary

The phlebotomist performs venipuctures and skin punctures on patients of all ages competently and expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements.

II. Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Collects and accurately labels blood specimens from patients of all ages according to policy and transports to appropriate testing sections.
  2. Receives and transports specimens from the laboratory drawing area to appropriate testing sections within the lab.
  3. Responds to order priorities in a timely manner i.e., STAT, ASAP, TIMED
  4. Maintains collection tray and laboratory drawing area in a clean and organized

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Assists others in the laboratory in those functions not restricted by rules,
    regulations or laws.
  2. Complies with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety and infection control.
  3. Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  4. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  5. Completes annual safety, infection control and educational requirements.
  6. Is knowledgeable of the mission, ethics and goals of the department.
  7. Participates in CQI activities.
  8. Employee authorization for access to EPHI is determined by job function and is under the direction of his/her Department Director.

Employee will be required to be readily available to work during any weather related incidents or other natural disasters and/or any emergency situations that may arise.

III. Education

High school graduate or equivalent and completion of a certificate program including Phlebotomy Preferred. Experience is required with no completion of a certificate program.

Licensure: None required

Education and/or In-services to verify ability to obtain specimens for the age of the patient i.e. Pediatrics, Geriatrics, etc.
CPR required every two years.

IV. Qualifications And Experience

Trained in Phlebotomy procedures of all ages.
